Lumi ja jää och Mosquito Nights

Lumi ja jää means “snow and ice” in Meänkieli, the Tornedalian Finnish language spoken in Tornedalen. But what exactly is Tornedalen? A snowflake takes us to a place where the summer sun never seems to set, and polar night reigns during the long winter. Join us on a dance tale through snowstorms and snowmobiles; from icy cold to the warm early spring. We encounter mysterious figures, each eager to share their stories of their home, Tornedalen, in their own unique way.

The Tornedalian choreographer Unni Britta Kangas uses contemporary dance, hip-hop dance, and dance theater to spark curiosity and share knowledge about Tornedalen and Meänkieli, the minority language.
